Summary Of A Modest Proposal - 1304 Words
Samantha Ingham Brittnaey Harp English Composition 23 September 2015 Text In Action Imagine living n a country where everyone is so overpopulated and in such poverty that they had to sell their children for meat, now picture fattening up your children so that you could sell them for even more money. This is exactly the idea that Jonathon Swift proposed to Ireland to help limit the problems they were having. During this time period they were having economical problems such as poverty and overpopulation. Throughout Swifts writing we are able to recognize many things such as his purpose for writing ââ¬Å"A Modest Proposalâ⬠and how itââ¬â¢s achieved, the form of emotional and logical appeal he uses to draw in his readers, along with his strongest and weakest elements in his text. Although Swift proposes his modest idea of selling children into the meat market, that is not his real solution, it is simply an idea that he proposes to get his point across that if something doesnââ¬â¢t change fast within his community there could be extremes that people have to do in order to survive. His real solution is stated at the end of the piece when he says ââ¬Å"At taking our absenlees at five shilling a pound, of neither using Cloaths, nor household furniture, except of what is of our own grown and manufactureâ⬠(Swift). He is saying that in order to improve the economical situation in Ireland, they need to be taxing their people and making their own products. Adaptive Challenges Of Cultural Crisis In Nepal â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Adaptive Challenges Of Cultural Crisis In Nepal. Answer: Introduction Globalization has been an effective force which has brought significant changes in the past decade. Globalization has practically affected each and every persons in the world in some way or the other. The following report is based on the study of the adaptive challenges of Cultural Crisis in Nepal. The Nepalese are a friendly and curios bunch of people and enjoy providing hospitality to the vast number of visitors that come every year especially to conquer Mount Everest. People are not generally fond of politics and racist class difference and during any casual conversation with the people of Nepal such topics must6 be avoided. The Adaptive Challenge of Cultural Crisis in Nepal Emergence of the Challenge Nepal has been edging closer to a humanitarian crisis and it is believed to be much bigger than the earthquake that rocked the country and destructed its economy badly. The earthquake has damaged closed to 70% of the cultural heritage of the country. The rich cultural art pieces, the temples and the historical sites were all destroyed to a great extent (Satyal et al. 2017). After the devastating earthquakes it was the turn of the Government to clear the destruction and start from the beginning. However as time went by it was found out that most of the countries natural heritage were damaged and devastated to a large extent. It is a difficult task for Nepal to overcome such a deep crisis as because tourism forms the main backbone of Nepals Economy. Globalization Globalization is a potent force and turns every people slaves under its rule. Nepal is totally affected by globalization (Upadhyay 2017). The NGOs, Government institutions, internet, information centers, schools, colleges all are dependent on technological advances of globalization. It dominates the localization which is purely based on the economic profit. Globalization emerged as a hot trend in the 90s and since then it has undergone a major transformation. Using the latest and improved technologies to tackle globalization has been a successful venture which has helped to attract more and more tourists to the country. It has also helped in bringing forth the cultural qualities of Nepal in front of the whole world. Therefore the potential force of globalization lies in the spread of the cultural and social values of the country in the whole world. Challenge being Addressed To ensure sustainability the government must address the issues on an urgent basis. Restoring the sites and the monuments will be the key to the future of the country. The hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu Temples that was the main focal point of the Kathmandu valley were damaged either totally or partially. The government has to restore all these establishments to return to the old and normal ways and receive the same amount of revenue from foreign money exchange (Thapa et al. 2016). The restoration should be done in a proper and scientific way so that in the future there is no possibility of any further damage from such large scale earthquakes. Organizations like Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust have been appointed by the government to preserve and restore the damaged natural properties of the country. Until now the trust has restored more than 50 such historical sites and buildings and now it has given a keen concentration to restore the Patan Square to its original form. Actions needed to address the challenge As mentioned earlier the government of Nepal has taken some significant steps towards the restoration of the cultural pride of Nepal (Koirala 2017). The appointment of different government sponsored agencies, NGOs, foreign institutions can e said to be a positive effect towards the rebuilding of the country. UNESCO sends an international mission team to assess the damage levels on the international heritage sites of the country. The Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust has restored a lot many buildings that were damaged totally or partially and has now shifted its attention towards the restoration of the Patan Square. The organization has given special care to restore the monuments in such a way that it can resist the natural calamities like earthquakes easily. International Visitors are also providing huge sums of money to rebuild the monastic community which includes the damaged monasteries and temples. Therefore the organization must ensure that they have a perfect answer to stop a ny sort of destruction activities that may cause damage to the buildings in the near future. Boundaries needed to be crossed Nepal is facing a huge crisis and a large threat looms over the country as because it will be impossible for them to restore cultural heritage without a large scale support from different sources around the world. Just minutes after the earthquake both the Indian Army as well as the Chinese Army were the first to react to the situation and went to Nepal to start rescue operations. It is known to all that India and China are at loggerheads but such a situation established a new regional and social cooperation between the countries. Therefore Nepal must take lessons from this and spread out its arms and embrace any sort of help that can restore its cultural heritage. The authorities must train the farmers of the country to practice sustainable forms of agriculture so that it causes no damage to the land patterns (Chase et al. 2013). The country should also follow global specification standards while reconstructing the different heritage sites. Values needed to be shifted Traditional values about culture must be shifted so that the restoration process becomes much faster. The more the process is the faster it will help the country to attract more tourists. The different institutions and organizations that are involved in the restoration process must make it a point to address the issues so that there is a transparency in the total program (Endsley 2016). Collaboration will also make the business more effective and will help to make sure that the restoration works are done without any flaw. It is the task of the Government of Nepal to develop a strategic build up between all the related parties. Therefore adapting such innovative strategies of shifting the values will help Nepal to cope up with the crisis situation. Role of Technology The collection of digital data in social media like facebook and google has been of huge help for gathering information about the missing persons and other key information after the terrifying earthquakes of Nepal (Endsley 2016). Technology has played a great deal of part while restoring the cultural masterpieces of the country (Lama 2016). Skype, Viver and some other telecom and internet call giants decided to make their service free to help the needy that were affected in Nepal during the earthquake. Apart from this there are other considerations like the construction of the buildings and the maintenance of the cultural heritage of the country. Conclusion The aim of the report was to evaluate the main cultural crisis of Nepal. The researcher had been able to attain the aims and objectives of the report. The discussion of the challenges that the country faces and the ways to tackle them will be of immense help to the organizations that are involved in the restoration projects. The report will also be a valuable source of information for future references. 7 Common Mistakes Made By College Applicants
Eager to complete their college applications, students often donââ¬â¢t take the time to carefully think about what they are submitting or consider the consequences of some common mistakes. We asked our friends at Solomon Admissions what are some situations you want to avoid: 1. Not demonstrating enough interest. There are many ways to demonstrate interest in a college, and many of them will consider this as they review your application. One of the strongest ways is to visit the campus. If thatââ¬â¢s not possible, other ways include: requesting an alumni interview locally, ââ¬Å"Likeâ⬠their Facebook page, or subscribing to any blogs or newsletters they might offer to prospective students. Equally important, do not use a generic response to any questions about why you are interested in a particular school. You should have very specific reasons to demonstrate your knowledge of the school. 2. Not following instructions. Too many students donââ¬â¢t follow instructions ââ¬â extra recommendation letters, too long essays, attachments that duplicate information already on the application ââ¬â these are all common mistakes. Admissions staff must wade through thousands, if not tens of thousands, of applications; creating more work for them isnââ¬â¢t appreciated and extraneous information is often ignored in the interest of time. 3. Not answering the questions asked. Far too often students have decided what they want to say on their college essay, regardless of what the question is actually asking. Thereââ¬â¢s a reason a college is asking a particular question - whether itââ¬â¢s on their own application or the Common App. The essay helps colleges determine whether a student is not just capable of understanding the question, but also if thereââ¬â¢s a good ââ¬Å"fitâ⬠between the student and school. Some questions can seem deceptively easy or simple to answer, but they are actually seeking a great deal of critical thinking in your response. If you are unsure what the essay is really trying to get at, ask a teacher or counselor to help explain it. Similarly, when answering ââ¬Å"Why Xâ⬠, answer with what you hope to contribute to a college environment and how itââ¬â¢s a great fit for what youââ¬â¢re looking for, donââ¬â¢t just repeat what theyââ¬â¢ve told you about themselves. 4. Being too ââ¬Å"cuteâ⬠, or a sesquipadalian or self-important. Writing an essay using ââ¬Å"textingâ⬠language or ââ¬Å"emojisâ⬠is not appropriate. Neither is an essay written in haiku. Itââ¬â¢s the rare student who can get away with being ââ¬Å"cuteâ⬠on an essay and still say something meaningful. Donââ¬â¢t risk it! Using long, fancy words when shorter, common words will suffice is also preferable ââ¬â it doesnââ¬â¢t impress anyone and studies have shown that they can make you appear less intelligent. Finally, although you should use the application to present yourself in the best light, appearing too self-important, highlighting privilege, or denigrating others will hurt your application. 5. Poor proofreading/Relying on computer. Itââ¬â¢s important that your application be polished and well-presented. Although you can use your auto spelling or grammar checks as a start, do not rely on them exclusively. They are not perfect, and will not catch properly spelled words that are not the ones you meant to use. 6. Waiting until the last minute. Asking your counselors and teachers for letters of recommendations or to send out transcripts, test scores, etc. at the last minute is disrespectful of their time and will likely cause a delay in submitting your application. You are not the only person who will be asking for their help; ask very early; the end of your junior year is not too soon. 7. Not following up on completion. Submitting your application does not mean it is complete. Letters of recommendation, test scores, and transcripts are sent from other sources. It is your responsibility to ensure that all parts of your application are sent by the required deadline. Your application will not be considered if it is incomplete.

In what ways, if any, can Shelleys Prometheus Unbound be considered a Essay
In what ways, if any, can Shelleys Prometheus Unbound be considered a revolutionary work - Essay Example This is why it speaks to us even today. P. B. Shelley was an English Romantic poet who rebelled against English politics and conservative values. He drew no distinction between politics and poetry and his work reflected the radical ideas and revolutionary optimism of the era. Like many poets of his times, Shelley employed mythological themes and figures from Greek poetry. Poets and scholars have traditionally read the tale of Prometheus as a lesson in revolution, seeing the imprisoned Titan as an emblem of the lone individual in heroic rebellion against mindless tyranny. The title character, Prometheus is perhaps more than other heroes and serves the scholars as a sort of critical mirror. As many critics have noted, through the doubling of the human qualities of Prometheus and Jupiter, Shelley subtly emphasizes the lack of distance between the tyrant and the slave, and also the cynical nature of time through periods of liberty and tyranny. Shelleyââ¬â¢s manipulation of genres throughout Prometheus Unbound creates a con trolled sense of expectation and contrast that permits him to progressively expand his drama towards universal harmony. The lyrical harmonization of the universe pervades all levels of drama, uniting the mental drama of Prometheus and with the external drama of a transformed world, signaling the affirmative revolutionary edict of a new age of humanity. In Prometheus Unbound Shelley uses the old myth of the Titan who rebelled against the tyranny of the gods and who was punished by being chained to the rock. Obviously there is no amount of reality or human interest in the fantasy. There are two plays named Prometheus unbound. Both are concerned with the torments of the Greek mythological figure Prometheus and his suffering at the hand of Zeus. Percy Bysshe Shelleyââ¬â¢s Prometheus Unbound is a four act play first published in 1820. It is an inspiration from the first ââ¬ËPrometheus Boundââ¬â¢ by Aeschylus

Lady Macbeth Essay Example for Free
Lady Macbeth Essay Explore how the narrator in ââ¬ËThe Laboraroryââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËPorhyriaââ¬â¢s loverââ¬â¢ and Lady Macbeth and ââ¬ËMacbethââ¬â¢ express their desire for power and control? Both Shakespeare and Browning are renowned writers from the world of English literature. The audience were forced to explore the choices made by the characters in both Macbeth and a selection of Browningââ¬â¢s poems to find out the different strategies they use to express their power and control. In Act one scene five, Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s powerful character, having control over her husband is clearly expressed through her decisive language. ââ¬ËThou must do, if thou have it.ââ¬â¢ Lady Macbeth uses a forceful tone to convey her view on Macbeth murdering Duncan in order for him to achieve his ultimate goal of taking Duncanââ¬â¢s place. Itââ¬â¢s clear on the control and power Lady Macbeth establishes on her husband and is a great contrast to how in the Elizabethan times women were worthless and didnââ¬â¢t have any say. Here, Lady Macbeth has reversed her gender role from being a kind loving hostess into a more affirmative, strong minded commander. This will be a rebellious character in the eyes of the society. Moreover Lady Macbeth begins to sharpen her plans but isnââ¬â¢t too sure as she thinks her feminity would become a weakness. She proclaims towards supernatural substances (spirits), which were seemed to be believed in the Victorian era. ââ¬ËUnsex me hereââ¬â¢. This was a vivid way asking spirits to strip her of feminity weakness. She imagines herself as a vessel which h maybe emitted out and refilled with evilness. Also by risking her chance of having a baby for power shows her urgency toward power and control. This is odd as in the Elizabethan times it was the womenââ¬â¢s duty to have children and look after them. Lady Macbeth wanted to get rid of her feminity for power which is quite odd and different to others like the speaker in the Laboratory, where feminity is threatened. Mo reover when she says ââ¬Ëand take my milk for gallââ¬â¢, its suggesting that she no longer wants to be a female. ââ¬ËGallââ¬â¢ comes from an excess of yellow bile. An imbalance of yellow bile can make one ruthless and insolent. If Lady Macbeth is internally poisoned, it would gain her control over the King. Moreover, Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a very strong character, compared to Shakespeareââ¬â¢s other female protagonists where they are timid and weak. She uses this strength to fulfil her dream of Macbeth becoming the future monarch. This is further demonstrated through the use of alliteration of the letter ââ¬ËTââ¬â¢ at the beginning of each sentence in Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s soliloquyà presenting the fact that Lady Macbeth is organised in a sense that she has planned every detail precisely. Similarly ââ¬ËIn The Laboratoryââ¬â¢, the female speaker uses language which comes across as forceful. ââ¬ËGrind away, moisten and mash up thy paste.ââ¬â¢ Here we are seeing a female person giving out demands to a professional poison maker. This behaviour can be seen as unconventional, meaning that in the Victorian era women were not supposed to be demanding or forceful towards other individuals especially men. This decision the speaker had made is showing the audience that the speaker is strong-minded yet not too insane over her decisions. The speaker in ââ¬ËThe Laboratoryââ¬â¢ is being enthusiastic and decisive about creating an evil plan which in the audiences mind will come across as intriguing. Normally women of the Victorian era would most likely to be enthusiastic about hosting a dinner party and not preparing to kill a human. Both Lady Macbeth and the speaker in the laboratory wanted to kill but Lady Macbeth doesnââ¬â¢t actually want to fulfil the deed herself. Moreover the speaker in The Laboratory is very unsympathetic towards her victims, as she is very eager to get revenge. ââ¬Ëthe exquisite blueââ¬â¢. This indicates that she wants the potion to be strong so it should be a bright blue so that the revenge will be successful whereas if it is a grim colour then the potion wonââ¬â¢t be strong and will look weak and old when it should be powerful. Her keenness for this to be successful is further demonstrated through the use of rhyme scheme, AABB, quickening the pace of the poem. It also indicat es that she is almost cursing the mistress and most of the lines are similar in length showing that she knows exactly what she is doing to acquire power. Also within the poem there are twelve stanzas with the rhyme scheme. This also reinforces the fact of the poem being quickened. Iambic pentameter is also being used due to her passion within her planning for the disgrace. ââ¬ËBrand, burn up, bite into its grace.ââ¬â¢ This is an example of alliteration in the ââ¬ËBââ¬â¢ sound which is very harsh. This language shows her desire to inflict pain on her victims, cause their sufferings and disturb their beauty. On the other hand Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s soliloquy is written in a logical order showing that she wants to get rid of her feminity slowly and slowly. The speaker in the laboratory similar to Lady Macbeth makes significant references to her religion. ââ¬Ëempty church, to pray God in, for them! ââ¬â I am here.ââ¬â¢ This gives us an impression that for the speaker, it is more essential to create a potion to kill ratherà than pray to God in a holy Church. This phrase can indicate that the speaker has chosen to take a negative route within her life therefore disobeying her religion. ââ¬Ëfor themââ¬â¢. This illustrates that she is referring to both her lover and his mistress; as if she is doing them a favour by praying to God. Her decision to make poison in the laboratory shows her as immoral and rebellious. From this itââ¬â¢s clear that the speaker gives no value to the views of her society as she is seen very disrespectful towards her societyââ¬â¢s views on being religious. Similarly Lady Macbeth is shown to be making numerous references to religion which have great influences on her decision makings. ââ¬Å"And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hellâ⬠This emphasises on how she wants to hide her evil deeds from heaven and from herself. The actions and words portrayed through both these characters show great personality of the two women. These two dominant females are seen opposing their religion, reversing their role s in the society as well as becoming involved in sinful behaviour to gain either pleasure or status. However Lady Macbeth wanted to kill for her own gain to receive royalty, whereas the speaker in the Lab wanted to kill for revenge. Moreover the laboratory has been written in the style of a dramatic monologue. This form can reveal a lot about the speakers inner thoughts and can create a strong relationship with the audience as well. ââ¬Ëand Pauline should have just thirty minutes to live.ââ¬â¢ This portrays the power and control the speaker has over Paulineââ¬â¢s life and also emphasises on the fact that she now has the choice of killing whoever she likes. As she is the only speaker the audience can only look through her viewpoint. This perhaps can make the audience feel quite uneasy to trust a person who is making a potion as there are no other characters involved within the evil plot. On the contrary, Macbeth, is seen to have less courage and power while standing up against Lady Macbeth, who according to that society should be lower in hierarchy than Macbeth in terms of power and control. Macbeth wants peace of mind and wants the process to end once and for all ââ¬Ëthe be all and the end all.ââ¬â ¢ Macbeth speaks of an action not a personal thing; he wonders if the action will be all that is required and end all of all that he must go through to be the king. Macbeth would like his deed to be limited. As Macbeth is about to kill Duncan he says ââ¬Ëit is the bloody business which informs. Thus to mine eyesââ¬â¢. This illustrates that Lady Macbeth has been able to gain full control of her timid husband asà he is been forced to kill. His words show that he is afraid to kill the highly respected king who is believed to be selected by God. Macbethââ¬â¢s use of alliteration in Act 2 Scene 1 ââ¬Ëbloody businessââ¬â¢ presents the fact that Macbeth knows of this kind of business and hates it but yet is forced in to it. This is very ironic that Macbeth is scared to kill as he has just fought a war which involves mass killing. During Macbethââ¬â¢s time killing a king was a great sin against God as kings were appointed by God. Also during that era men controlled the women whereas in Macbethââ¬â¢s situation his wife controlled him. However on the other hand, in Porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover the speaker sets positivity about his lover. This can show him as a higher classed person and he has gained a female follower. This makes himself immortal and feels like he is p laying the role of God. Thus going on to killing Porphyria and witnessing ââ¬ËGodââ¬â¢s silenceââ¬â¢. Unlike Macbeth, Porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover felt no guilt after he slaughtered his lover as he felt ââ¬â¢no pain felt sheââ¬â¢. He may even believe that she enjoyed the pain because he, her lover inflicted it. This implies that heââ¬â¢s an unsympathetic speaker. The language of the speaker in Porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover shows how the narrator is ignorant to God ââ¬ËAnd yet God has not spoken.ââ¬â¢ This implies the speaker is acting humorous in saying God didnââ¬â¢t speak and thinks it is acceptable to murder a female. ââ¬Ëhas notââ¬â¢ portrays the speakers choice of murder. He is seen as criticising his own faith of not directing him in the correct pathway of not committing evil. In the Victorian era men showed more sexuality towards women and most of the people believed in god. ââ¬Ëand yet god hasnââ¬â¢t said a wordââ¬â¢ this shows although they believed in faith they still sinned. ââ¬Ëno pain felt she; im quiet sure she felt no painââ¬â¢ the speaker comforts himself that porphyria felt no pain when he killed her. This may not be true. He does not feel sympathy for the fact that he killed her and in this statement he is justifying his actions. Lady Macbeth and porphyria arenââ¬â¢t similar to the average women in their times -they urge for power; porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover is being controlled by porphyria. ââ¬Ëshe put my arm around her waistââ¬â¢ this implies porphyria is commanding and gives her lover no choice about what he wants to do. Similarly Macbeth is in control by a female, and this female being his wife, Lady Macbeth. ââ¬Ëthou Marshallââ¬â¢stââ¬â¢ me the way that I was going.ââ¬â¢ Lady Macbeth and porphyria are both in control. Porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover has a simple structure; ABABB. This structure shows the madness in the eyes of porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover. Ità is laid out in one long stanza as Browning wants to preserve the moment. The structure of Macbeth and Porphyriaââ¬â¢s lover are different. Porphyriaââ¬â¢s loverââ¬â¢s structure was in one long stanza because he wanted to stop time, whereas Macbeth wanted to commit the scene as soon as possible.

Andrew Wythe :: essays research papers
Andrew Wythe Andrew Wythe was an amazing artist full of imagination, feelings, and compassion for his work. He has a great portfolio of work consisting of his two major styles of work, realistic and abstract. A lot of his personal life goes into each painting he creates. Each piece can usually be linked back to the life he lived and fond memories he wished to preserve. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Andrew was born in Maine and has quite a history to be told from living there. He has been painting for fifty years and has changed his style some during those years. He used to paint realistically for quite some time but then made the change to painting abstract. As a child, Andrew has very fond memories of his father and the fun times the family had together. He can recall a time when his father dressed as St. Nick and frightened him so much that he wet the bed. Just before Christmas, the whole family recalls hearing footsteps on the roof. Their father dropped a painting of St. Nick down the chimney for them. His father did illustrations, so Andrew had plenty of backing for his creative talents. Andrew can remember being very interested in the art of war ever since his early childhood years. He remembers playing with his tiny soldiers and creating stories for them. Andrew?fs father believed that a painter should be left alone from the ages of 6-18. Andrew had tutors for his schooli ng whereas his brothers and sisters went off to school. This gave him free time to roam the countryside. Andrew did not attend college but instead studied under Howard Pyle at his school with 12 other students. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Andrew?fs father died near his house in Maine because of a train accident. Andrew really viewed his father as a hero and looked up to him. He will always remember his father and because of this a heavy influence is always with Andrew when painting. His father?fs life truly inspired Andrew and because of this, Andrew?fs paintings are all very personable and all have a story to tell. The paintings mostly represent his life in Maine and represent the climate and area well. Most of the paintings are of houses, naturalistic surroundings, and his neighbors and friends. He would paint various rooms in his house to portraits of his friends. All were done with such depth and character.

Understanding The Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman Free Essay Example, 1500 words
Wal-Mart's buying power allows them to set prices that have not anything to do with the provider and demand of the marketplace for a good. For instance, Wal-Mart used to sell a 12 pound, the gallon jar of Vlasic pickles for $2.97. Vlasic and Wal-Mart were creation an income of only one or two pennies a jar if that. This exacting price had nothing to do by means of the supply of cucumbers or the insist for pickles, but was a false price, compulsory by Wal-Mart to draw customers in with their "abundance of abundance". 3 Coercing Vlasic to agree to this price allowance move the majority of Vlasic's rents to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart also influences a company's products. Firms may drop brands that do not meet with Wal-Mart's performance expectations and try to tailor their products to be sure that Wal-Mart will carry them. Video game maker Planet Moon censored certain aspects of the game Giants, such as changing the color of blood from red to green, clothing a topless character, and toning dow n offensive language in order to have the game granted a "teen" rating by industry standards. To ensure that Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers would carry their product. Wal-Mart also refuses to sell CDs with offensive lyrics and has been known to cover up or discontinue selling "racy" magazines such as Maxim. Censorship is an example of lessened product differentiation. In the pursuit of concessionary lower prices, production quality suffers. TV stands are made thinner, cheaper materials are used, and unnecessary extras are removed from products. This extreme influence that Wal-Mart has over the products that are supplied to consumers is a little frightening. The loss of variety, quality, and obvious censorship involved is a disturbing effect that Wal-Mart has on the product market. According to the expert analysis, it is a relief to discover that Fishman an editor at Fast corporation magazine is not just one more journalist on an assignment to depiction Wal-Mart as a monstrous scheme next to the little g uy.

Essay on Social Learning Theory of Albert Bandura
Social Learning Theory of Albert Bandura If youve taken an introductory course in economics, youre already familiar with the policy planners dilemma of deciding whether to allocate limited resources for guns or for butter. The problem is usually posed to illustrate the impersonal market forces of supply and demand, profit and loss. Yet planners are people, and most individuals come to the war-or-peace decision points of life having already developed preferred responses. Northwestern psychologist Donald Campbell calls these tendencies acquired behavioral dispositions, and he suggests six ways that we learn to choose one option over another. 1. Trial-and-error experience is a hands-on exploration that might lead to tasting theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He uses the term modeling to describe Campbells two midrange processes of response acquisition (observation of anothers response and modeling), and he claims that modeling can have as much impact as direct experience. Social learning theory is a general theory of human behavior, but Bandura and people concerned with mass communication have used it specifically to explain media effects. Bandura warned that children and adults acquire attitudes, emotional responses, and new styles of conduct through filmed and televised modeling.2 George Gerbner (see Chapter 29) was concerned that television violence would create a false climate of fear. Albert Bandura cautioned that TV might create a violent reality that was worth fearing. Banduras warning struck a responsive chord in parents and educators who feared that escalating violence on TV would transform children into bullies. Organizational Behavior Management and Practice
Question: Discuss about the Organizational Behavior Management and Practice. Answer: Introduction The competitiveness among the business organization is increasing day by day and; therefore, the businesses are focusing on increasing their productivity and long-term performance. The employees or the human resource play a critical role in driving the performance of the business and improving organization effectiveness. Therefore, business organizations irrespective of their size try to retain their best employees in the organization. The business organizations also try to build relationships with their employees and motivate them to become more productive in their day to day life. They also develop strategies to increase the performance of the employees because if they are not able to manage their workforce properly they will not be able to achieve organization goals and retain their employees. Today, a large number of business organizations are acknowledging the importance of the human resource and realize that the employee not satisfied or not motivated to with their jobs will br eak their association with the organization and it will not be able to attain success (Podmoroff, 2016). In order to motivate the employees, the business organizations implements various financial and non-financial reward strategies. The financial rewards refer to the monetary gains which entice the employees to perform better. Money is fundamental to the employer-employee relationship. In a business organization, the employees work towards the aims of the organization and in its exchange get monetary benefits. Therefore, a business firm can use money to motivate the employees. However, the efficacy of money in motivating the employees to achieve targets more than their regular targets in unidentified. In this regard, in this essay, the impact of financial rewards in motivating the employees is explored. The thesis statement of the essay is, whether financial rewards, which are fundamental of employment relationship, can be effectively used in motivating the employees. Management Theories of Motivation In the twenty first century, the organizations are striving to achieve their targets and increase employee productivity. Several management theories have stated that the employee motivation is a critical factor in the organization development and productivity. Therefore, the organizations are focusing on enhancing the employee productivity by increasing their motivation level. The motivation can be defined as the psychological process which directs the behavior and gives a purpose to an individual. It is the predisposition of a person wherein a person behaves in a specific manner to accomplish the targets and the organization goals (Daft and Marcic, 2010). There are several management theories that centers motivation and state that there is a driving force in each employee which needs to be identified and triggered. The attribution theory of motivation states that the people put large efforts if their efforts will result in enjoyable outcomes. Moreover, if the outcomes of their efforts will result in high esteem then also the individuals will put strong efforts in their work. The cognitive and the self-efficacy theory state that the efforts of the employees are dependent upon their expectations with themselves and self-efficacy. The expectancy theory states that an individual works harder in expectation of some rewards for their efforts. The behavior of the employees can be both positive and negative dependent upon the outcomes of their performance. If the outcomes of the task are not motivating then it is highly unlikely that the individual will perform better. The cognitive theory states that the organization culture plays a critical role in the motivation and engagement of the employees. The individual employees are motivate in the organization is dependent upon the perception of the employees and if they assume that the incentives are worthy of their efforts. The employees will also be positive in the workplace if they presume that the targets are achievable to the (Javid and Chapa, 2014). The motivational needs of the employees can also be understood by Maslows pyramid of hierarchical needs wherein the levels are physiological needs, safety and security needs, social needs, esteem needs and the self-actualization. According to this postulation, the people desire to move to another level once they have achieved the previous level. Accordingly, once the people start earning money to satisfy their basic needs and security needs, they desire social status, reputation and recognition. Along with it, the employee motivation can be categorized into intrinsic and extrinsic needs. The extrinsic motivation factor are the external factors such as job security, remuneration amount, working conditions, status of the employees and flexibility and the employee friendly policies. However, these external factors can be categorized as the minimal requirements that keep the client satisfied. It means that if these extrinsic factors such are acceptable then they prevent the employees fro m getting dissatisfied. If the organization maintains the satisfactory level of these factors, the employees are not motivated to exceed their expected demands or requirements. However, in contrast to it, there are some factors which are crucial which develop the performance of employees. These are termed as intrinsic motivation factors. These factors include recognition, achievement, responsibility, growth opportunity and responsibility. The relationship between the employee payment and the job satisfaction is also very low and it becomes increasingly irrelevant in uninteresting tasks. In the task, where the employees are not motivated by the work itself, the financial remuneration is negatively correlated with the intrinsic motivation of the employees. Moreover, the employees motivated by the financial factors are less likely to perform better than those employees who are motivated by the work itself. Though money is a kind of motivation and satisfies the basic needs of the employees, it cannot motivate the employees to increase their productivity. A positive working environment can be established by enhancing the job-security and transparency in the work environment (Kulchmanov and Kaliannan, 2014). Impact of Monetary Remuneration The relationship between the employer and the employees is characterized by the financial and the monetary rewards and their exchange. The employees work to achieve the aims and of the organization and in return get monetary rewards. The financial rewards are also correlated with the growth needs and the value of the employee. They are a major motivating factor in the motivation of the employees; however, there are several other factors which are associated with keeping the employee motivated such as the organization culture and the growth prospects of the person in that particular organization. The impact of the remuneration or the financial rewards is also different as it generates different emotions in different employees. In some culture, the people identify and relate their worth in accordance to their wealth. Generally, the business organizations reward their employees in terms of their seniority and association with the organization, job status, competency and the performance in the organization. The different kind of financial rewards are associated with different returns such as rewards associated with seniority are aimed to reduce the turnover, and the rewards based on the job status are aimed to motivate the employees to compete and become productive. However, the seniority based rewards also reduce the turnover of the employees with lowest productivity. Along with it, the rewards associated with the job status encourage the employees to internally compete which create organization politics (Wilton, 2016). Nowadays, the organizations are also starting to provide competency based rewards to motivate the employees to increase their performance. It includes increasing workplace flexibility to keeps the employees motivated. However, the competency based rewards increases overall cost of the company as the assessment was totally subjective and the employees spend time in the acquisition of new skills. The financial rewards are crucial in motivating the employees early in their career. In the financial rewards, the money spent directly by the company in motivating the employees is higher than other non-financial rewards. The financial rewards given by the company can be categorized into cash bonus and the salary hikes. The overall salary and the compensation offered to the employees are major factor in keeping the employees motivated. The incentives or the cash bonus is additional payment or cash paid on top of the regular salary to encourage the employees to achieve the companys goals (Step hens, 2005). The bonuses are beneficial for the employees as well as the employer as the employees get additional money whereas the employer gets the best performance. The salary hike is done once or twice a year to retain the talented and senior employees within the organization. The percentage of the annual raise is specific to an organization and is dependent upon the performance, sales and loyalty of the employees. Usually, the raises are a percentage of the annual income and also associated with the promotion of the employees. Another monetary reward is commission which is directly associated with the performance of the employees. The commission is usually given to the people in sales and amounts to the amount of sales completed. The commission assists the employees to makes as much sales as possible to increase their commission. The employees get out of their way to increase the sales and so to increase their income. The companies also recruit the employees with high benefits package. The b enefits package of the organization wherein the direct compensation to the employees is low; however, the benefit package is higher makes the organization more appealing to the potential candidates. There are other types of financial rewards also such as profit sharing and piece work motivation (Latif and Saddiqui, 2014). In the recent years, the organizations are also shifting towards providing team-based awards and commissions according to the performance and the rank of the employees. Although these group based rewards are weakly linked with the motivation level of the employees, they impart a sense of ownership to the employees. These organization rewards include stock options and organizations share (Tech-Hong and Waheed, 2011). However, the monetary rewards are only successful in motivating the employees at a lower level. In senior positions, the employees are more concerned about position and prestige. The correlation between compensation, motivation and performance is complex. There is no specific relation between monetary compensation and performance at work at higher level. Even with the abundant resources, it difficult for the organizations in deciding the ideal salary to motivate the employees to perform better (Mills et al., 2006). Although money is a significant motivational factor in employee performance, it is sufficient in itself. The motivational value of money can be determined as its ability to make the job enjoyable and engage and satisfy the employees. The correlation between remuneration and the employee satisfaction is weak. Other factors such as organization culture and flexibility are crucial in increasing the employee satisfaction. Moreover, the employees who are motivated intrinsically have tendency to perform better which are extrinsically motivated. It means that the employees who enjoy work and are motivated by it performs better than the employees who are engaged by the money involved in it (Tech-Hong and Waheed, 2011). In regard to the high performing employees, the companies assume that since these employees are high performing, they are internally driven and do not require external motivation. The high performing employees perform their best as they receive market level compensation. However, money or the financial remuneration singularly cannot motivate employees. The expectation of receiving money in near future is highly motivational; however, the motivation diminishes, once the employee receives the money (Armstrong, 2007). Therefore, it can be posited that although money is important, the employees need more motivating factors. At the senior stages of career, the employees want to be recognized and acknowledged for their contribution to the organization. The employees want their organization to state that they have contributed to the success of the organization (Griffin, and Moorhead, 2013). The business enterprises can also not use money to change the behaviour and outlook towards. Although money is an essential motivating factor, and it motivates the every employee to some extent, it directs the work of the employee rather than motivating them. The impact of compensation in motivating the employees is also dependent upon the compensation design and the incentives structure. The failure in the compensation design can be due to the failure of linking the business objectives with the performance measures, providing performance feedback to the employees and design variance in incentives from the base salary which is motivating to the employees (Armstrong, 2002). The incentives system of the organization should be effectively designed so that the employees are willing to work harder and achieve targets. It means that the targets designed by the company should be achievable as well as the incentives should be lucrative enough to motivate the employees (Yousaf et al., 2014). As discussed above, the fundamental to the employee-employer relationship is money; it means that the employees work to obtain their remuneration. However, it is important that the organization do not underestimate the power of money in motivating the employees. Money is crucial in attracting talent and recruiting employees. However, once the employee is hired or within the organization it is important to provide the employees with other factors to keep motivating them. It can be argued that the flexibility in the workplace is other factor which motivates the employees to work harder according to their comfort. The employees expect they will be paid fairly according to their efforts; however, over-paying the employees provided little motivation to work harder (Kaufmann, Schulze and Veit, 2011). Therefore, along with money the companies should focus on other factors that encourage the employees to work harder. Moreover, money does not become a motivating factor after the employees hav e obtained the basic amenities in life. The employees are also motivated by money when they presume that their compensation is directly correlated to the performance of the employees. Therefore, it is important to introduce flexibility and positive organization culture to motivate the employees to achieve the organization goals. The driving force of each individual is also different. Money works for most of the individuals; however, the motivational factors for each employee are different. Some employee strive for money whereas, some employees strive for recognition and appreciation (Taylor and Taylor, 2011). Conclusion It can be concluded that the employee motivation is significant aspect in increasing the productivity of an organization. Many companies realize that employees are crucial resource of an organization to achieve their targets. Employee motivation is crucial in driving the employees to achieve their targets. In this regard, the business organizations implement several strategies to motivate the employees to achieve their targets. The companies implement both financial and non-financial reward system to encourage their employees to achieve more than their targets. The financial targets of an organization include incentive system, annual hikes and the cash bonuses. Although cash is an essential component of the employee motivation, it does not always yield desired results. It is due to the fact that different people get motivated by different driving force. At the senior positions, the impact of money in increasing the performance of the employees gets reduced and the people get motivate d by recognition and the social value. Therefore, it is important to introduce social value components such as recognition, and appraisal to enhance the performance of the employees. Moreover, the organization culture and the employee flexibility are also essential in the motivation of the employees. It has been identified in the essay that the people motivated by the work are more likely to deliver results than the employees who are motivated by the money. The thesis statement of the essay can be restated as, Although financial rewards are essential to employee motivation, they cannot be implemented singularly in motivating the employees. Issues Facing Medicare
Medicare plays an important role in the United States system of health care by providing more than 45 million American citizens with insurance cover. Medicare is a program established to provide health insurance to individuals regardless of the status of health and income level. Although it is mainly established to cater for health needs of the elderly (65 years and above), the program caters for the needs of about 7 million permanently disabled adults.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Issues Facing Medicare ââ¬â program established to provide health insurance. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Registered members contribute a certain amount of money throughout their working life so that together with their spouses, their health needs are catered for after they have retired. In order to meet the financial obligations faced by the Medicare system, funds have to be sourced from beneficiaries, revenues from the fed eral government and tax. At present, nearly all people aged 65 and above are insured by Medicare. Although it is a popular program, Medicare is currently faced with many challenges and issues. Issues Facing Medicare The greatest challenge facing Medicare is lack of sufficient funds to cater for health needs of the future generation. This is because of the high cost of health care and the increased number of baby boomers in the United States. Annual increase in the cost of health care has in turn increased expenditure. Studies conducted in 2010 show that the number of Medicare beneficiaries is likely to rise from 47 to 78 million by 2030. For instance, the estimated population of Baby Boomers expected to join Medicare in 2011 (individuals born between 1946 and 1964) was 77 million. To handle this number, Medicare needs some improvements. According to the Medicare Board of Trustees, if changes on the Medicare program are no put in place, the likelihood of the program being insolvent/b ankrupt by 2024 is high. The following measures have been suggested if the Medicare Trust Fund is to be financially stable beyond 2024. The salaries of physicians should be reduced by 40% and payments made to other companies providing services to the programs will also be deducted. According to government experts, available funds in Medicare Part A Trust Fund will not be enough to cater for full benefits of the large population. The experts also argue that the program requires additional revenue if it is to maintain the current benefits. This implies that beneficiaries will be forced to bear the burden of increased premiums. Today, 30% of the cost of healthcare comes from the pockets of the beneficiaries. These costs increased annually. Like health care expenditure, increased spending in Medicare is caused by the high cost of services offered in health systems, new technologies, and increased utilization of services.Advertising Looking for essay on health medicine? For instance, annual expenditure is expected to increase to about $3 trillion in 2030. The federal government will be forced to adjust the budget to accommodate the requirement of the program. This will affect funding of other important sectors like education and defense. Because of the increased number of retirees, Medicare will lack funding because the workers will be few. This is because Baby Boomers include the largest percentage of employees in the United States. The economy of United States is largely determined by Baby Boomers because they are innovative. In addition to lack of funds, the program will need to hire more professionals to cater for the large number of retirees.
